Bo0tiez: I've posted the information about the costs involved, as well as the web sites and books I've taken them from. If you don't like the way it sounds from me, then please look it up. I'm sorry you don't agree with the cost breakdown, but those are the facts - I'm not yanking them out of thin air, I'm repeating the research of others. As to your comment regarding statistics, I don't think you understand what's involved in conducting a study, or the rigorous process it goes through to be published in a reputable journal. Please take the time to learn about this, and then you can take the matter up with the academics who published the studies - I'm only repeating their data, which, both murder rates and financial, their research determined. There are to my knowledge, no published studies that have passed this rigorous process which support the role of detterance or the saving of money with the Death Penalty. You are free, however to look it up for yourself. Chris

However, prisoners on Death Row are guaranteed a fixed number of appeals, (and are en_title_d even more than the fixed number if they can proove a problem with the preceeding trials!) thus court costs start to balloon. Those serving life in prison are not en_title_d to these appeals, and will only get them when and if the public defenders' case load becomes light enough for him to work on it. well I could be wrong but have always read that every person is en_title_d to appeal their cases....matter of fact think back to those who rightfully claimed they were wrongfully convicted....they appealed many times....Donald Marshall rings a bell to me...I am sure he did not pay for his own appeals....it is people like us on the outside that get told when the case loads are lighter they might consider helping us...I can quote an example from personal experience....I can barely afford for my son and I to live...yes I do get some assistance which I am thankful for and working hard to get off of...however when I had a situation arise when I needed legal aid, I was told they have suspended that service due to the heavy caseloads...try again in a year or two....well under normal circumstances it wouldn't be life threatening to me but when your child's welfare is in danger it is extremely frustrating..(long story I won't bore you with nor do I expect anyone to feel
