The reports I have quoted from provide sound basis for questioning CFSC's unusual position to promote helmet use (why, if there are no benefits) while fighting against legislation. Of course that is assuming everyone considers the reports accurate. The reports you read are *Avery's* opinions and conclusions, not CfSC's. I think it is obvious by the fact that CfSC *does* support the use of bicycle helmets that we do not agree with all of the opinions expressed on Avery's web site. CfSC supports helmet use *as one of many actions by many p_layer_s* to ensure safer cycling. Helmets are not the beginning and end of safer cycling, of course. Bicycle helmets have proven their value to many individuals when other measures failed, but not in all cases. The uselesness of helmets when worn in the absence of other safety measures such as the cyclist using lights at night, or the motorist driving at a safe speed for all road users has also been demonstrated in Ottawa-Carleton during the last five years. I will also add that this is all I have to say about helmet use. The topic has been more than adequately discussed on this and other newsgroups. Other list members are really tired of the topic. I respect that. You and Avery are, of course, more than welcome and even encouraged to explore the issue and seek your own truths.

The reports you read are *Avery's* opinions and conclusions, not CfSC's. Just for the record, only one of those items quoted was my opinion, and that was:   It is difficult to see anything but harm arising out of helmet laws and that is supported by a fair amount of evidence in the text. The other quotes (all noticeably quoted by Steven Slaby without context or identification of their various sources) were either directly lifted by him from different research reports or statements of fact written by me _base_d on the research quoted. As the web page introduction states, the helmet FAQ was established to address some of the conflicting information on the efficacy of helmets and their use. It was partly aimed at helping others counter fools like Slaby who promote MHL but who haven't bothered to spend some time finding out any of the relevant facts. CfSC's promotion of helmet use has always been secondary to its prime focus on accident prevention.  While I don't encourage helmet use. I have no argument with CfSC's approach and it's completely consistent with the answer to question 15 - What is the most effective way of reducing cycling injuries?

currently looking for a helmet to wear when I downhill ski. The reasons behind this decision is not due to my abilities as a downhill skier, but the lack of skills of others I share the hill with. I would not take any personal satisfaction knowing I was doing my best at preventing/avoiding an accident when someone else loses control and slams into me from behind. This past season I bought a helmet to use while windsurfing. The odds of getting knocked unconsious while windsurfing is very small, but the consequences (drowning) are so severe I would prefer to be alive and slighly inconvenienced than upholding my right to be free at the bottom of the lake. This is another hotly debated topic among windsurfers; I would estimate that less than 5% use helmets. This is the first time I have realized just how many *helmets* I will have... I suggest you just wear a helmet 24 hours a day, then you won't have to struggle with such decisions. I also suggest you defend your views on rec.bicycles.soc where the helmet discussion has been raging for years, mostly because few people care enough to find out the facts for themselves before they spout off about what others should do. The CfSC moderator doesn't want it on here unless there's new information to add.

I think Brett had the right idea.  If you two want to keep arguing about this, take it off this public forum and send private emails back and forth. Personally I don't think either of you is going to convince the other of your opinion so why don't you just agree to differ? Maybe the automoderator should be set to filter emails from both of you for a couple days until you both cool down. Roger

Both the driver and I were uninjured; the vehicle was a writeoff. Many years ago I rolled my bike when a car clipped me at an intersection. I ripped my t shirt but came back up on both wheels.  Does this mean that bikes are better built and more durable than cars?

Norwegian Minister of Justice did not sit at home and dived in the waters of the Arctic. I must admit that bad for the minister!
