AIST (which is part of MITI) sponsors a variety of major R&D programs including the following.    National Research and Development Program (Large-scale project)    Research and Development Program on Basic Technologies for      Future Industries (JISEDAI program)    National Research and Development Programs for Medical and Welfare      Apparatus    Research and Development on New Energy Technology (Sunshine project)    Research and Development on Energy Conservation Technology      (Moonlight project)    Research and Development on Technologies Related to Global Environment    The Human Frontier Science Program In addition, there are programs in industrial technology, international cooperative R&D, technology promotion, standardization, technology information, etc. Looking over the details of these programs readers may have a tough time deciding why one specific research project is in a particular category but not in another. AIST has come to a similar conclusion. I am told that beginning next fiscal year, 1 April 1993, these large programs will be reorganized. For example, the first three above will merge into a new _title_, Leading Research Schemes , and that the energy related projects will fall under the New Sunshine Project . Ongoing projects will be continued, but new project proposals will undergo a more public feasibility phase before a final decision as to their acceptance. This sounds like a very good idea, but we will have to wait until the details emerge to know for sure. In the meanwhile, I attach an overview of the Basic Technology for Future Industries (abbreviated as the JISEDAI Program), because it has one very interesting software component. But readers should be aware that JISEDAI will probably disappear within a few months. This report summarizes the AIST R&D program on Basic Technologies for Future Industries (JISEDAI) and provides some additional details on one specific project, New Architecture for Software Structures. Most of this material is extracted from AIST documentation.
